Chapter Twenty-Seven

Logan stood in the garden of Donald Sloane’s rented house, watching the white paper suits come filing out, and waiting for the all-clear to be given for him to go in.

Technically, he could’ve gone in any time he liked, but if there was evidence to be found in there he didn’t want to be the one to jeopardise it. Better to let the experts handle it.

Besides, he wasn’t expecting them to find much, if anything, so the usual driving urge to stick his nose in wasn’t there.

A cordon had been set up around the house to keep the press and the Nosy Parkers at bay. There hadn’t been a big media response to the murder, which Logan was pleased about. The last thing he needed was half of Fleet Street coming up here and making the place look untidy.

Still, there was a small knot of the bastards gathered just on the other side of the cordon tape. Logan had been asked for a statement on his way past but had managed to resist giving them the two-word one that had immediately sprung to mind.

While he waited for Forensics to finish clearing the scene, he went over the conversation he and Tyler had with Kel Conlyn. It had been enlightening in some ways, but disappointing in others. Despite his misgivings about Sloane’s guilt, or lack thereof, Logan had been hoping for Conlyn to drop some big bombshell.

Oh aye, he hated Esme’s guts, would’ve been nice.

Always said he was going to kill her someday, would have been nicer still.

But no. Conlyn could offer very little about Sloane that they didn’t already know, aside from one detail that had taken both detectives by surprise.

Logan had phoned it in when they’d left Conlyn’s house. He’d spoken to Ben directly, in case the information could turn out to be useful.

“Sleeping together?” Ben had said, lowering his voice to a whisper like he was worried about offending someone. “Sloane and Esme?”

“No, ye div,” Logan had replied. “Sloane and Conlyn. It was a fling, by all accounts, on-off. Only lasted a couple of weeks, if that. But aye. They were at it.”

The line had gone silent for a few moments while Ben contemplated this. “What does that change? Does it change anything?” he’d asked.

“I’m not sure. Doesn’t count him out for the rape. That’s about power, it’s not necessarily even a sexual thing,” Logan replied. “But… I don’t know. Worth bringing up with him, anyway.”

Ben had agreed on that and promised to keep Logan updated of anything that came out of the interview. Sloane’s solicitor had finally graced them with his presence, so Ben and DS McQuarrie were about to head in to give Sloane another grilling.

“I’ll feed through on anything we find here,” Logan told him, and then both men had hung up without bothering to say any goodbyes.

Logan checked his watch. Almost noon. They wouldn’t be able to hold Sloane much longer without charging him. Fortunately, they had a couple of counts of assault they could hold him on, which would buy them a bit more time.
